Alarm sounds

I needed an alarm sound for sending some alerts by SMS and found Alarm event WAV files at Simply the Best sounds, where there are other collections also. Those are plain .wav files but are OK, you can use them on your PC or on your mobile if it accepts that format.

The classic «Houston, we have a problem» is of course on the list.

Geek discount on Amazon

On the Amazon homepage they have a 1,57079632679% off for everybody that goes through their new A9 search engine to do some book searching and shopping:

Well, 1,57% is not too much.

But at least is better than eπi+1.

On this page Amazon explains the reason for the discount. To divide π by 2 is "to share". The campaing is called Sharing the Pi (for non-english speakers: pronounced like Sharing the Pie). So what they are actually doing when offering a  π/2% off is "to share" the pie of the advertising revenues of A9.

A geeky way of telling a lot... and just with four symbols!

The future we would like

While browsing around I found the interesting Tales of Future Past where the author shows a compilation of old pictures from magazines where everybody dreamt about the future. My favourite sections are the ones on the future of aviation and home living in the future.

500 images

On my spanish blog I have been publish an 'image of de day' for 500 days now. It has been fun most of the time, really. The collection included a mix of personal pictures (mainly taken by me, but also from my blog coworkers), favourite movie scenes captured from DVD, TV series, musicians, artists, writers, scientists and some curious or espectacular pictures just found on the Internet, with references when possible. In essence, it's was a geek way of showing many of my favourite things in life.

The other day I discovered Pix8.net, a free image hosting site, so easy it doesn't even requires registration. You basically upload the images one by one, get a URL for them and the use it on weblogs, message boards, acution sites or personal pages.

So I have made a compilation on a simple page of all the 500 images in convenient 25-packs.

Sugestions: maximize your browser window or clic on the magnifying glass (if it appears) to see the pictures at maximum resolution. Each pack is a 250 KB JPEG so it may take some time to download. The chronological order is reversed (like reading backwards) so the oldest is at the bottom right, the next to its left, and so on, then upwards. Same from pack to pack. Thank you Pix8.net for the hosting!

Frankly: revisiting the 500 days of images reminded me of the old say about 'when you are dying, you see images of your life pass in front of your eyes... like in a slide show'. Anyway, I prefeer the geek version that says that the final slide show will be a PowerPoint.
